Synopsis
FROM THE INTRODUCTION:
One of the most noticeable trends in the development of railway modelling in recent years has been the increasing interest in scenic work. This has been reflected in the steadily improving standards. After having a train set as a child, later disposed of when we had to move house, my interest in the hobby was again stimulated as a teenager by the scenic layouts appearing in the model railway press. Modellers such as John Ahern, John Allen, and P. D. Hancock have managed to combine skill and originality in railway modelling with an ability to communicate their ideas and enthusiasm to others. I was among the many who must have been inspired by their imaginative work and to me scenic modelling has remained one of the most interesting and enjoyable aspects of the hobby.
Nowadays no model railway layout can be considered complete until a scenic setting has been provided for the line. Even the beginner soon becomes aware of the desirability of scenery on a layout as the manufacturers often show models in simple scenic settings in their catalogues and many model and toy shops have small layouts, complete with scenery on display.
