5 out of 5 stars Classic Thomas & Friends: James Learns a Lesson, Now on DVD!   June 14, 2005
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

Now you can get the old Thomas & Friends episodes on DVD! This year they're making "James Learns a Lesson", and probably they'll make "Trust Thomas", "Thomas Gets Bumped", "Thomas, Percy & the Dragon", and others. This one ("James Learns a Lesson") was Volume 2 and was made in 1990. These are the episodes:

James Learns a Lesson - James is a splendid red engine who is new to the Island of Sodor, and Sir Topham Hatt has asked Edward to show him how to pull the express. When they get to the station, James accidently "weeshes" some steam and gets water all over Sir Topham Hatt's brand new top-hat. James wants to leave quickly, so Edward and James go. Later, Sir Topham Hatt scolds James and threatens to paint him Blue! Then he tells James to pull the express by himself, but Edward warnes James not to go too fast and not to bump the coaches beacause like freight cars, they will get back at you. James doesn't listen and goes too fast and bumps the coaches. The coaches get back and make him stop dead on the track! The driver and fireman find a hole in James' brakepipe, and the only way to mend it is with some newspapers and a leather bootlace. But where are they going to find a bootlace? They check all the passengers, until one man, (whose name is Jerimiah Jobling). He refuses to give the driver and fireman his bootlace, but the driver says that without the bootlace, the train will have to stay here forever! He gives them is bootlace, and James is on his way. But this is a sadder and wiser James and remembers to take care to never bump coaches again!

Foolish Freight Cars - Sir Topham Hatt scolds James for bumping the coaches and locks him away in the shed. The next day, Sir Topham Hatt comes to see James. He says that the railway is running slowly, so he gives James another chance. The job Sir Topham Hatt gives James is to pull a very heavy, long line of freight cars. James is determined not to let the freight cars cause trouble. So while on his way, he always has to stop so that the driver and fireman can make sure that the freight cars' brakes aren't on. When James comes to the hill, the tail of the line of freight cars comes down the hill. James makes it to the top of the hill, until the driver finds out that the tail has been left behind. Edward is at the bottom of the hill when James goes back for the freight cars. James manages to make it all the way up the hill. When he reaches the station at the bottom of the hill, standing there is- Sir Topham Hatt! He tells James he is proud of him and gives him a new coat of paint.

A Proud Day for James - The engines are making fun of James about the time he made a hole in his brakepipe (from "James Learns a Lesson"). When Gordon is to pull the express, he tells James that he has "enstinct" and knows just where to go. A few moments later, Gordon returns and says that a signal diverted him on a loop and sent him back to the station. Sience Gordon is late, Sir Topham Hatt tells James to pull the express and James is delighted! James pulls the express so well, and doesn't even make a hole in his brakepipe! When James returns from the station, he and Gordon decide to be friends, and Gordon won't make fun of James again.

Thomas & the Conductor - Now its Thomas' turn on this video. Thomas has is own branch line (given to him in "Thomas Saves the Day", from the "Thomas Gets Tricked" video), and has two coaches called Annie and Clarabel. One day, when he reaches the station, Henry is late, so when Thomas leaves, he forgets the Conductor! Annie and Clarabel try to tell Thomas that he left the conductor, but Thomas doesn't hear them. Until finally, he hears them and stops to see the conductor, running and panting. Thomas says sorry, and the conudctor hops onboard, and Thomas goes on his way.

Thomas Goes Fishing - Thomas loves to see the river, and really wishes to fish. But the other engines say that engines don't fish! But Thomas still wants to fish. When the water tower by the river is out of order, his driver decides to get some water from the river. But, unknown to them, there's a fish in the water! When Thomas goes on his way, he feels a pain in his tank and puffs smoke like he is sick. The driver stops the train, and Sir Topham Hatt and an Inspector come to inspect Thomas. When they look in Thomas' tank, they see a fish! Sir Topham Hatt, the Inspector, the Driver, and Fireman take turns fishing in Thomas' tank. They then have a lucnh of Fish and Chips (French Fries). Sir Topham Hatt then tells Thomas that engines don't fish, and Thomas agrees!

Terence the Tractor - It is fall on the Island of Sodor, and in a field a tractor is hard at work. One day, Thomas stops to see the tractor. The tractor introduces himself as Terence, but Thomas makes fun of his catipiller tracks. The next day, winter comes, and the snow is piling up on the track. Sir Topham Hatt tells Thomas to put on his snowplow. Thomas doesn't like the snowplow, so he shakes and bangs his snowplow and breaks it. The next day, Thomas is delighted not to have his snowplow. But while coming out of a tunnel, he gets stuck in a pile of snow! The driver and fireman try to dig him out, but it doesn't work. What are the passengers going to do? Then a bus comes and saves the passengers, and who to save Thomas? Terence the Tractor! He pulls Thomas out and Thomas says sorry for making fun of his catipiller tracks.

Thomas & Bertie's Great Race - One day, Thomas meets a bus (the same bus that rescued the passengers in "Terence the Tractor").
He introduces himself as Bertie, and says that roads are much faster than rails. Thomas says that rails are much faster than roads any day, so they decide to have a race. Their drivers agree, and off they go. But they face obsticals such as for Thomas: stations and old tracks, and for Bertie: railroad crossings and traffic lights. Thomas makes it to the last station first, and then Bertie arrives. The passengers cheer for Thomas, and cheer for Bertie. Sir Topham Hatt tells Thomas not to race at dangerous speeds, and the passengers don't like to be bounced around like peas in a frying pan, but he is still impressed at the race! Thomas and Bertie soon become friends.

So that is it! Extras on this disc include:

Character Gallery
Sing-Along Song
Web Fun

Now I can see the classic Thomas & Friends much clearer and easier than a VHS!
